Franz Schubert and His Merry Friends (Hardcover)
Franz Schubert and His Merry Friends (Hardcover)
This book is about the brilliant young Schubert, his merry friends, and their pranks and escapades, in most of which Franz is the hero. One of the most interesting stories in the book is the new light that is shed on the history of the Unfinished Symphony. It remained unfinished, not because of poverty, illness and discouragement, or because of the composer's early death. The real reason, according to the authors, was that Schubert's merry friends were starting for a picnic just when he was in the middle of it, and he went along. Before he left he stuffed the partly written score in his desk and it was never taken out again! There are many selections from the composer's magnificent music in this volume. We have the March Militaire, the Moment Musicale, the theme of The Erlking, a dance from the opera, Rosamunde, Rondos, Dances, the lovely, lovely waltzes, impromptu pieces, the Cradle Song (a favorite of almost every child) and several of the beautiful songs. Living books for composer study

Comments:
These books are so fun! I just gave a copy of this title to a home school mom who is beginning with the Charlotte Mason philosophy of education. She started to read the book and could not put it down until she finished it. That's a sure sign of a great living book - it captivates your thoughts and attention at any age. These books by Opal Wheeler are great fun for composer study. They are profusely illustrated with a picture on every other page. They include samples of the composer's musical scores. With copyright dates in the 1930's, I'm so glad to see these excellent living books come back into print after so many years. Now we don't have to hunt at library book sales and used book stores to find a copy of these heretofore out-of-print titles. Thank you Zeezok Publishing! Recommended for elementary age students.
