We've used Artistic Pursuits since we started homeschooling and have found it to be an excellent program.
It has several strengths - first, in that it teaches the basics of art like line, form, composition using truly "great" works of art. Students are carefully guided in the techniques, but still given the freedom of creativity in how they use them.
Because the examples are those of the Masters, children are actually less intimidated because they recognize these pieces as being the very best - something to strive for versus competing with.
The parental suggestions are excellent, including works of art by children at various ages to help the non-artist understand what to expect from their child's efforts.
Finally, the history sections of the first book are nicely organized to correspond with a classical lesson plan.
We're now into Book 2 and intend to continue with the series.

We are using this curriculum with a small group of home schooled elementary kids. the kids like to see the paintings that are with each lesson. It is very easy to teach from and original idea for the art activities. We plan to go through all the levels.
